Counts-as and conversion?

With a Daemon army on the horizon as my next Warhammer 40k army, I've been thinking about some conversions and counts-as models to spice up the army a little. If it clearly represents the model and there aren't any shenanigans going on, how do you feel about some of these conversion ideas?

Bloothirster (Balrog from LotR, paint him red, add some chain and brass etchings from Forgeworld)

Seekers of Slaanesh (put regular Daemonettes on top of Dark Elf Cold Ones).

Flesh Hounds of Khorne (Chaos Warhounds, painted red and brown)

Daemon Prince of Slaanesh (Ultraforge model, but otherwise a perfect Daemon Prince).

  1. I'd have absolutely no problems with any of those whatsoever, as long as they're on the appropriate base.

I have heard of some people having issues with the whole chaos hounds - flesh hounds counts-as, but that might just be flesh hound owners getting all prissy because they forked out for the expensive models...

  2. Any one of those would be just fine with me. I especially love Ultraforge's models. Their Vrock (cough*lord of change*cough) and their giant are fantastic models.

  3. they all sound fine to me too, with one caveat.

The "Warhounds as Flesh Hounds" thing does cause me to raise my eyebrow. This is primarily because we all like to think of Warhounds as a cheap, throw-away unit, but consider Flesh Hounds in a very different way. Concern would come as your opponent (who has been told they are Flesh Hounds) sweeps his eye across the table and doesn't really give a second thought to the "Warhounds" he thinks are skulking on his flank. Is this problem your opponent's fault? Partly, because you informed him at the start of the game, but it's also partly your fault if they look just like Warhounds.

My suggestion? Do some conversions and/or put them on taller bases (rocks logs etc) to make them visually more menacing. It moves them from that throw-away unit look to something more scary.

    Cheers
    Dave

  4. Is the warhound / flesh hound thing an issue in 40k? I don't recall warhounds in 40k.

  5. I don't think any of them would be a problem. Not a lot of other -hounds in the Daemon codex.

  6. I think the first three choices are fine, as long as the paint job really do mark the units for what they are. For example, the Flesh Hounds better look like they're daemons of Khorne, and not just a redish brown flesh colour. I think davetaylor's suggestion, of using bigger bases to mark them off as more special troops, is a great suggestion, by the way.

Best of luck with the project! Hope to see some pictures of converted Seekers of Slaanesh and the rest!

I'm however not too keen on using that Ultraforge model as a mere Daemon Prince, I think it is a too big model for that (quite the bit larger than a Bloodthirster, for instance). It sure is a beautiful sculpt, and wonderful model, but personally I think it is out of scale. You might use it as a Keeper of Secrets instead though, might fit better.
