Wood Elves emerging as my next project.

Yes I do have the army attention span of a gold fish if something doesn't "stick" right away. Lets just get that out of the way. Lately I have been looking around for another army, and with the help of browsing miniatures and listening to a few podcasts I have decided on the Wood Elves. I wanted to build a "good" army to oppose my love for the Skaven, and the tactics and underestimated nature of the Wood Elves appealed to my idea of an interesting army.

The modeling aspect is not lost on me either. I am looking forward to possibly converting my Treemen and Treekin from scratch (er, well from GW Forest sets) and coming up with a paint scheme I enjoy. Right now I am really digging a Fall / Autumn theme with browns, tans, oranges, and reds. Take a look at the models from the GW Glade Guard Gallery that I am using as inspiration.

As far as a list, I really want to try out massed Glade Guard for a bit before a delve into loads of Treemen and Treekin. The hit and run and massed shooting really interests me. Here is the list.

What do you think about the color scheme? The army?

  1. Love Wood Elves. Look forward to watching your army grow. Regarding the list I've always been a fan of Wardancers, as much for the models as anything else :).

  2. I love the Autumn Color pallet lots of really nice tones and definately the way i would go with painting them. I have always thought about painting some to have with my Brettonians for those crazy big Storm of Magic games since with SOM you can really push fluff and background. I would really be interested in your take on the army from a gaming point of view since they are ranked super low. I have seen solid players do well with the army and love the underdogs.

  3. I am interested in seeing how well I can play with them. I consider myself a good player, but I won't claim to be able to win tournaments with the worst possible army. It will take a lot of practice just to win games.

I do definitely think they are underestimated and I also want to give the "bowline" a try before resorting to the monster mash that is usually more successful. I think with the right game plan I could pull it off.

  4. I think you made a good decision. Word on the Waywatchers - two units of 5 aren't as effective as 1 unit of 10. Their main strength is Lethal Shot and that seems to have a greater effectiveness in a unit of 10 rather than 2 of 5. I think you'll end up dropping about 30 Glade Guard for a bigger melee presence but who knows the massed shooting may fit your playstyle. Good luck man! This will be sweet!

  5. I made a trade today to get everything I need for this army, or also another version with up to 40 or more Dryads. I will be able to try them both out. The other version I wrote had 2 units of 10 Waywatchers, but dropped the Wild Riders and the second level 1 caster.

  6. The color scheme is very eye catching. The pics you posted up are good, but I noticed that the shading/highlighting is very muted. Not sure if that is the case in person, but overall the impression in the pictures of their clothing/armor is very much base color. You may want to add another very thin layer of highlighting to the raised edges. And possibly a very very thin shading layer into the recesses.

  7. These are the test models from GW's website. I haven't started painting mine yet. They probably won't be that nice.

  8. As much as I love Dve Taylor's work, the Robinson elf looks best to me. Glade Guard huh? You must be ballin' to afford that many, lol! Will you be taking them to Adepticon this year?

  9. I am going with the second (orange) scheme, after buying the paints I need on Wednesday. OST: I sold a bunch of Skaven I don't use and traded a few malifaux crews I don't play to fund the entire project.

First wave arrived yesterday and the rest should be here next week. By the time I get back from Chicago I should have everything to get started.
