The Gamer's Sanctuary in Flint, MI is hosting one of the only local tournaments in the area next month (or any time recently other than one's I have run myself). That would be great news, if their comp pack wasn't garbage. They have a lot of the GLWL system restrictions, but then throw in specific anti Skaven restrictions that they don't also hit any other army with. "You may only take 1 Hell Pit Abomination, Plague Furnace, OR Screaming Bell". Really? Did you get beaten by Skaven that badly that you have to specifically target them, without also taking a look at Lizardmen, Warriors of Chaos, or Dark Elves? It's ok, for Dark Elves to take a Hydra, Cauldron, and Stubborn Pegasus Lord though... we wouldn't want to make it too hard for the Dark Elves to beat the Skaven.
Thanks but no thanks, GS.

I'm not sure who wrote the guidelines, but I can definitely forward this to the staff and I'm sure they'll take customer feedback.
ReplyDeleteHonestly my criticism is harsh, because I really want more events in the area. To be a little more fair I would be ok with it if they just removed one line from the pack:
ReplyDeletePlayers may NOT have more than one (1) of the following selections in their army: Arch Lector, Hellpit Abomination, Plague Furnace, Screaming Bell, Hellcannon, War Hydra, Black Coach, Wraith or Flamers.
Otherwise if they are going to take a closer look at one army, they should also add comp for Lizardmen, Daemons, Dark Elves, and possibly Vampires.
ReplyDeleteBut imo army specific restrictions are over the line.
My first statement is: Comp is for people who do not want to play THE game, they want to play THEIR game.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, I find it funny that they still disallow the Power Scroll... I have not seen anyone, other than Skaven, take that since it got FAQ'ed.
Two steamtanks are still ok, two stegadons are still okay, yea you are being hosed. Do you happen to know what armies the organizers play? A group locally rigged their comp to disable the best counters to their prefered army build but that is another beast.

4 Stegadons are ok technically, because you can have 2 special slot stegs, 1 rare Ancient Stegadon, and an ancient mount for a hero.
ReplyDeleteYou wouldn't be able to have 2 Steamtanks because no army can have double rare that cost more than 100 points.
We are certainly open to any and all suggestions. No one at Gamers Sanctuary has been beaten by any particular army so bad that we adjusted the rules in accordance. We don't have many WHF players at the Sanctuary and thus I (a very, very new Ogre Kindgoms player) and owner of the store, tried to write up some tournament rules that would be fair all the way around. Apparently, I was unsuccessful at this and I apologize to the WHF players out there. None of our rules are set in stone and we will happily change anything that encourages people to play WHF. Like I said, I am no WHF rules aficionado by any stretch of the imagination, I just googled as many WHF tournament rules sets that I could find and tried to meld them together. Anyone that can help us balance out the tournament rules is welcome to email me directly at chad@thegamerssanctuary.com and I will make the appropriate changes. We appreciate everyone's feedback and our goal isn't to hinder any specific army but rather to get more folks playing WHF. Any help, thoughts or ideas would be very appreciated!
ReplyDeleteThanks for replying and thanks Muggins for giving GS the heads up. Like I said in my own reply, I was overly critical but I do stand by my views.
ReplyDeleteIMO, just drop the line that says:
Players may NOT have more than one (1) of the following selections in their army: Arch Lector, Hellpit Abomination, Plague Furnace, Screaming Bell, Hellcannon, War Hydra, Black Coach, Wraith or Flamers.
Gamers Sanctuary just sent me an email explaining their position. I truly appreciate a store that takes the effort to find out what their players want!
