Counts-as and conversion?

With a Daemon army on the horizon as my next Warhammer 40k army, I've been thinking about some conversions and counts-as models to spice up the army a little. If it clearly represents the model and there aren't any shenanigans going on, how do you feel about some of these conversion ideas?

Bloothirster (Balrog from LotR, paint him red, add some chain and brass etchings from Forgeworld)

Seekers of Slaanesh (put regular Daemonettes on top of Dark Elf Cold Ones).

Flesh Hounds of Khorne (Chaos Warhounds, painted red and brown)

Daemon Prince of Slaanesh (Ultraforge model, but otherwise a perfect Daemon Prince).

40k Fight Club 2010 Painting Resolution!

40k Fight Club is have a painting Resolution Challenge, and I'm going to be adding to my Space Marine army

Greetings 40K Fight Clubbers!

With 2009 coming to a close it's time to start thinking of goals for 2010. The annual New Years Resolution. Looking around my hobby area, I see LOTS of unpainted stuff. My guess is that a number of you are just like me. Lots of unfinished GW business.

Personally, I'd really like to get one of these armies painted up so I can truly enjoy it on the table top. All I need is a little motivation, that's where you all come in.

I've partially stolen this idea from another hobby site, and I'm shamelessly going to use it here for the 40KFC.

Here's how it's going to work.

Register with an army of your choosing.

The Resolution will be broken down into twelve 1 month periods. Each period, a different force org selection is to be painted. Models selected to be entered in the Resolution shouldn't be any further than the primed stage at the start of the period.

January - HQ
February - Troop
March - Elite
April - Fast Attack
May - Heavy Support
June - Painter's Choice
July - Troop
August - Elite
September - Fast Attack
October - Heavy Support
November - Painter's Choice
December - Objective Marker

This will give any player a strong amount of models to choose from when building an army.

Each unit selected for painting only has to be at minimum size to be considered completed. For example, 5 completed tactical marines would qualify as a completed goal.

What consitutes completed? A model that has at least 3 colors, is based and clear coated. Granted, participants that go above and beyond will have a heavy advantage in case of the tie breaker.

If someone is choosing to do Imperial Guard, a squad of 10 guardsmen will qualify as a troop choice, you wouldn't need to finish the bare requirements needed to field an infantry platoon.

After each period, participants will either post a pic of their unit, or email it to me and I'll post it for them. Participants will then have a chart that shows their progress they can also use it as their signature to constantly remind them they should be painting rather than surfing the internet. 

On the chart, green will denote completed, yellow partially completed and red not completed. Each participant will earn 2 points for completed projects and 1 point for partially completed. At the end of the Resolution, the person with the most points will receive 2 sets of the new 40K Fight Club would markers (pics of these will be posted later). If there is a tie, The Prophet and I will be the tie breaker. (We are not eligable to win)

Hell Pit Abomination!

My army is finished! Here is a tease, because while finished I still need to add static grass to everything and a little bit of highlighting on the basing...

 

 

And here is a preview shot of the bases I just painted on all the remaining rats I had left. Now I am DONE, and like I just said just need some highlighting and static grass. I also need to paint a few more movement trays and find an army tray / display all for Sunday.

2010 Begins.

I am kicking off the year right, by finishing an army and entering my first tournament! No painting resolutions that I may or may not complete, but finishing my first complete army in years is a big step. I started the new Skaven in November when they were released, and now I have 2250 points painted. Well almost painted, I am finishing my Abomination, bases, and movement trays this week before the tournament on January 10. Hopefully I will have a full gallery of photos of Clan Rictus by weeks end. I also need to come up with an army tray to display them and transfer between tables for this weekend. That is dead last on the to-do list but I need something minimal at least for Sunday.

Also starting right after the tournament is the Great Lakes Warhammer League, which I will be participating for the first time. The system is a series of 5 games with composition and magic rules, and bonuses for painting. There is a league championship and tournament to end the season. I am bracketed in the Wayne Division, and the full division includes: 3 Skaven armies, 2 Vampire Counts, 2 Orcs and Goblins, 1 Dwarf, 1 Daemons of Chaos, and 1 Warriors of Chaos. With the fixed lists in, all 3 Skaven players are running Gray Seers... kind of making me wish I played my Warlord.


As far as 40k goes, today starts the 40k Fight Club Ravager Campaign in which I will be playing my Ultramarines. The campaign focuses on the defense of the city of Volstad from the Conquerors. There are different sectors to play in all with different special rules. My goal for the Ultras this year is to get a fully painted tournament level army. I've had most all of my infantry painted for months, and my Venerable Dreadnought and 1 tank, but I have a lot left unpainted. I guess it technically could be called a resolution, but I'm not going to expect much. I need to get some HQ's painted first and then do some serious tank painting.
