As you can tell, I've more or less abandoned this blog with a case of burn out and being super busy. After Adepticon I am diving back into semi regular blogging, but it will be with a new group of bros over at the Magnificent Bastards blog.

The Magnificent Bastards blog is an amazing source of hobby reading, and they've lowered their standards enough that I snuck on to the roster. Please follow me over there and enjoy the ride. And thank you everyone who has read and commented on Rhellion's Tabletop the last 3+ years.Rhellionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12727373774177135065noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4135552261014762020.post-6351181661120086382013-02-25T13:52:00.001-05:002013-02-25T13:52:20.865-05:003 color minimumI was able to get the Warriors army painted 3 colors and based, but then forgot to take a picture of it on the tray I brought. Here is a shot of the army in one of my games vs another Nurgle-heavy list.

Lots of work to do before Adepticon. A couple more primers to practice as well.
I keep my progress and comments there almost exclusively now, but here is some progress posted on the blog for future reference.

The army on the table for it's frst game this week. More to come soon with 3 Adepticon Primers in 3 weekends.
I am using Archaon as my Vampire Lord, and he is awesomely huge. I also wanted him on top of a taller base to put him even higher 'above' the unit (to look cool, yes, but mostly so he would fit on a cav base). I still have to grab a Terrorgheist and steal one of the rider heads for this guy, but he is almost finished.

I switched out the thick Chaos sword, and wanted a thinner sword for a more 'finesse' look. A lot of the other Vamps I have looked at have thinner swords.

I also added Isabella Von Carstein to the mix, but chopped her off at the waist and mounted her to be a Hero in the army. She looked good on a less masculine horse, so I put her on a Dragon Prince mount. Here she is and with another shot with the beginnings of the front rank ranked up.

More in the works very soon. I was at the hobby store yesterday and picked up loads of basing supplies. I need to grab some Simple Green and primer tomorrow at the hardware store and I will be set to get serious with this plastic.
With Podcasts. An excellent way to get better at Warhammer is to expand your rules knowledge. Another way is to increase your experience with different metas and different styles of players. One of the best ways to do this without traveling across the country (or world) is with Podcasts. There are many excellent podcasts and a few "just ok" ones out there for Warhammer, but I really recommend giving them a try if you want to get a very broad look at the Warhammer "World" out there.

While I have a few links on my blog roll, here is a more complete list of some great, and some at least somewhat good, podcasts:

Bad Dice. The best Warhammer podcast. Period. Ben also has a daily show, which is insane. The regular show co-hosts Mark and Gareth are awesome. Some great tactics and rules discussions.

Garagehammer. Best overall American cast, imo. Good mix of casual and tournament. I like the long episodes. Spans tournaments, hobby progression, as well as campaigns and large scale battle reports.

Pointhammered. Better than Garagehammer as far as tournament performance experience and specific hobby chat, if that is what you're looking for. Can be very crude, but it's alright with me.

Skull Bros Awesome. My favorite new podcast. Rising Star. Also very crude, haha.

Ohiohammer. Andrew is another work horse for podcasting. Lots of different episode types.

The Black Sun. Another very tournament focused cast from the UK, but also very crude.

Wisco Dice. Another Midwest podcast. Solid hobby balance with frequent tournament reports.

Painting Tabled. Hobby focused cast, with some tournament reporting when they go.

Canhammer. Another international cast. Chris is a good tournament player and the cast reflects that.

6 Dice Monkeys. Newer cast, haven't listened much other than their good VC review.

Bull City Wargaming. South East US cast. Need to listen more.

Chumphammer. Literally just downloaded for the first time. Will listen more.

And more I have been turned on to via Twitter:

Dwellers Below. Australian Warhammer. They probably play Warhammer upside down (I haven't listened yet).

Tale of 4 Geeks. Another new podcast in my list.

Westcoast Hammertime. Was told to check them out. So I will.

Noobhammer. Another new cast. Will check it out.

The only problem is that I think the Fel Bat models are terrible. After some musing and questioning on Twitter, I decided to convert some using Gargoyles and Ghouls. The result was better than expected. With some additional advice I really made sure to make the bases interesting. This is the result.
GOI was burned out on blogging for a while. I figure I may as well try again. I'll do my best to keep it casual so that I actually keep up on it long term. In the time I was gone I went to Screw City GT and got top 10. It was a fun event. I also went to Freshcoast 40k's Foodhammer charity event last weekend and won the Fantasy event. It is a pretty cool trophy.

I've also started a Vampire project. More coming soon as I delve into another new army. The plan is to play them on the tournament scene next year, starting with the 2013 Great Lakes Warhammer League.

I wanted to build a cavalry combat army, which was the exact opposite of what I am used to with my Skaven. The 4 main characters of the army are a Vampire Lord, 2 Vampires, and a Wight King. All the characters are conversion, but most of the infantry will be as-is. I have a couple more conversion ideas, and will add and update as models are assembled.

First, I picked up a new Wight King on foot, and wanted to mount him on a Black Knight horse. I had to chop him up and position his cape to go over the horse.

Being a Henchman includes the responsibilities of running demos for new players and events such as leagues and tournaments. Our FLGS Pandemonium in Garden City has a very strong retail presence for the game (they stock EVERYTHING), and a fledgling gaming group, so they have relaunched Malifaux Mondays.

As a Henchman I will be running open demos on Mondays from 6:00pm to 10:00pm with 4 different starter crews on hand for people to use, as well as my Terraclips board. In honor of getting accepted last night, I speed painted up this full Seamus starter box in 4 hours while watching the Olympics last night!
I have been wanting to play at this point level for a while and had only ever even played one game at 35 before, so the size was a little daunting as a new Warmachine / Hordes player. I was able to get another game in against Adam, who seems to be my most regular Warmachine player with my epic Madrak list. I should play with some other casters, but I really have been focusing on eMadrak as I learn the game. We played a scenario where you had to control the two zones once each to score 2 points and win.

I brought:

eMadrak
-Dire Troll Mauler
-Troll Axer
-Runebearer
Full Fennblades
-unit attachment
Full Pyg Burrowers
Full Long Riders
Fell Caller Hero
Trollkin Champion Hero

The idea of the list is tough cavalry and reach to go along with Madrak's "thresher" feat. Not too hard to grasp. I basically charged right up front and try to smash face (The "Axe to Face" Troll Strategy!). And it worked for me too, even though I got shot up as I advanced and lost my Fennblades, Adam focused hard on my left and I got in his grill on the right.

I was able to get +2 attack on the Pyg's and Blood Frenzy on the Long Riders and get into range to start chopping. Things ended when a Long Rider charged through two infantry with impact hits to get to Adam's caster and roll 6/6/4 for damage (with -4 dmg from armor), and then my Axer putting +2 move and Pathfinder on himself to get in range, make the final attack, and also roll box cars for damage to kill the caster for the Assassination.

It was a lot of fun playing at that level, and really makes me want to finish painting up my Trollbloods and start playing in more events. I'm pretty busy with the Skaven, but I see a lot of more Warmachine on the horizon for this Fall/Winter.Rhellionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12727373774177135065noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4135552261014762020.post-72844411474201431362012-07-31T11:43:00.000-04:002012-07-31T11:43:00.354-04:00Universal Battle game. This weekend I also played a big 3k game on Universal Battle with Grant Fetter. It was another Screw City practice game, as I try to get as many games in as possible with the Bell before lists are due (and make lots of little changes here and there to test things). Grant's list was a very cool, non traditional Ogre list with 2 Giants and 2 big gribblies with a Thundertusk and a Hunter riding a Stonehorn. Also lots and lots of Ogres.

After a first turn of solid shooting and magic, Grant could see how things were going and need to get stuck in fast. He charged into my Hellpit and I did 12 or so wounds in return to crush the Ogres on the left but they held Steadfast. In the middle my magic and shooting chopped down the Ironguts to a non-threat fast, but they still marched forward. A Skitterleaping brass orb scatted back and only killed 1 Mournfang, but also killed the lobbing Warlock.

The Beast Butcher got away and never did get finished, as Grant used his Thundertusk with great success to give my HPA always strikes last and charged it with a Giant, who killed the HPA. In the end though the Doomwheel was able to steal some points and kill the Giant in return with lightning bolts. In the middle the Ironguts waffled a bit before getting into the bell, but eventually stuck in. The Mournfang started charging all of my outlying units and wiping them all off the board.

In the end the Bell still stood and I finished off the BSB, General, and Gut Star with the Bell unit. They have been performing so well, but I still have not played them against a serious artillery threat which will spell the end of their great run, I expect. The game ended with me only winning by 160 or so points, which will probably be a draw depending on the Screw City GT rules, but Alex has been known to only require a win by 100 points.
But I've been thinking of playing a game or two with a regular Vermin Lord in my regular games lately, especially with Midlands coverage in the UK, where they have a Best Vermin Lord award! Ben Johnson, formerly of the Bad Dice Podcast, altered his Exalted Vermin Lord to fit a 50x50 regular monster base and to be used as a regular VL in tournaments... so I thought I would do the same with mine!

Here you can see just how much bigger than a normal GW Vermin Lord the Warhammer Forge Exalted Vermin Lord truly is. The model is light resin, but is still much too heavy to stay upright in a 50x50 base. I started out by layering some washers to get it to stand up. It worked, but it still wasn't completely steady.

Here you can see how I angled the entire model upwards slightly. The VL isn't leaning so far forward, and I also added a lot of green stuff to the base to cover the small bits I used to fill and help weigh the model some more.

Here you can see this monstrosity compared to a full size Hellpit Abomination. It's HUGE! You can also see I angled the model upwards even slightly more. The model is SOLID now and the bease is actually pretty heavy, holding it firmly on the table.

And here is the final Vermin Lord, ready for paint. Man this model is too cool to not use, so I will be getting some practice in with him soon to see what I can actually accomplish with him on the table. Hopefully I will start slapping paint on his this week, and will update when I do.
Spending some quality gaming time this Saturday, I got a game against Beastmen for the first time in a while, and finally got around to playing Michael O. from Fresh Coast 40K. I was playing around with my Bell list again, and he brought hordes and hordes of Gor, along with a load of magic support and a few gribblies.

Early on I knew I had to start chipping away at one of the Gor blocks as I used my artillery to kill some Minotaur before they annihilated me and built up all kinds of attacks. I used Scorch a couple turns in a row to kill a Mino per turn as I detonated my Doomrocket in the General's Gor unit, killing about 13 of them, and panicking them nearly off the board on a rerollable 9 LD.
The was no stopping the minotaur who eventually got into the Slaves and past the Doomwheel who screaming into and through the Giant. The Mino's were held up until the Bell could get into their flank, as the Abominations lurched into the Ungor block and L4 Death mage on the left flank. Eventually BOTH Hellpits got into the same combat by avoiding Purple Sun as their initiatives were reduced to 1 for 2 consecutive turns.
The Slaves were chopped down, but then the Bell unit finished off the minotaur in the flank. The big hit for my army was the next turn, with no Miasma up, a Purple Sun killed BOTH Abominations, haha.
It didn't help the Beastmen that their General unit fled again, and this time off of the board. As the other BSB/Gor block charged forward, the Bell unit finished them off as well. In the end even losing both Abominations to a single spell was not enough for the Beastmen to turn it around.Rhellionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12727373774177135065noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4135552261014762020.post-60087024176959883702012-07-28T10:39:00.000-04:002012-07-28T10:39:12.918-04:00Assassin comparison.Small hobby update today. I put together a new assassin today and was able to compare first hand the difference between the old metal and new Finecast Deathmaster Snikch models. I'm hoping to paint these guys up soon to mess around with in Fantasy, but taking a look at the models themselves, the Finecast version IS a bit of a disappointment compared to the old metal. It is so fragile in the thin areas it feels like it will snap with a stiff breeze. It also had a lot more work needing to be done to clean it up and I felt again like I would break it, and also had to remove some detail on the cape in order to get rid of some thick flash.

On the positive side, what detail is on the model IS more crisp and does look better. I do prefer Finecast over metal to have lighter models. I know some people love the weight of a metal model, but I am the opposite. I prefer plastic and finecast for the weight. Also, it is super easy to do conversions, which I may end up doing to the second assassin for when I ever use 2 of them.

More up tomorrow. Off to the hobby store to pick up the new White Dwarf with new Daemon rules inside, and to play a game of Fantasy and a game of Warmachine.

Rhellionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12727373774177135065noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4135552261014762020.post-77212324078561464762012-07-27T06:44:00.003-04:002012-07-27T06:44:40.381-04:00Necron DebutHad my first game with Necrons this week, and I had a blast. I played with the 1000 points I have assembled against Tau. My list was an Overlord with warscythe and res orb, Destroyer Lord with warscythe and 2+, 10 Warriors with Ark, 10 Warriors, 3 Wraiths, and an Annihilation Barge. We rolled up a scenario with 5 objectives, which meant we had a little more room to move around with only 1000 points on the board, but we still ended up playing for 3 or so objectives.

I planned on pushing forward with the wraiths and holding back with the Warriors, since I had 3 objectives on my side of the board. I had the Deathmarks deep striking, and held my Ghost Ark in reserve because I was supposed to go second, but then I stole the initiative. I had placed my objectives at the minimum distance on either side of the large building near my table side center hoping to capture both with the same unit... until we later read that a single unit cannot capture more than one objective!

The Wraiths ended up getting into the Fire Warriors in the ruins and wrecked them, but took wounds on the charge in from snap fire and in combat as well before getting run down for First Blood. We forgot about the Jink rules until the very end of the game, so my Annihilation Barge lost 2 hull points. My Deathmarks came down and nominated the non HQ unit of suits as their target and took one out, but couldn't finish them.

After this the Tau reinforcements came in and a huge Kroot and hound unit swarmed over the remaining Wraiths after my Destroyer Lord separated from the unit to finish the last suit. My Warriors in the middle of the board started positioning better in the building, but keeping out of sight for the time being. Without much to shoot at on my left where the rest of the Tau were, they were forced to move into the middle of the battle. As they moved forward I popped the Ghost Ark from behind the building with a squad inside, and moved the Warrior squad in the ruins into firing position, and unleashed the Gauss wave on the Hammerhead and dropped it fast with glancing hits and the Gauss rule.

After this I was able to spread to the left objective and finish off the second Fire Warrior unit. The Kroot didn't move off my right flank because they were holding an objective, but the HQ suit unit jet packed over on the final turn to contest the objective and leave us in a tie. But, because there are secondary missions in this edition built right into the rule book, I won because I took First Blood and my Necron Destroyer Lord did not die (giving up the Overlord / General victory points) on the last turn.

Rhellionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12727373774177135065noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4135552261014762020.post-82541936198680534972012-07-26T12:15:00.001-04:002012-07-26T12:16:39.207-04:00Against VampiresAnother game with the Bell, another victory that I don't really take stock in. I played against a special character heavy Vampire list with Heinrich Khemler and Krell, leading hordes of Skeletons and some flying support. This battle report will be short and sweet...

I won the first turn and advanced and got the Bell swinging, hoping for a solid second ring. My opponent maneuvered his units, blocking up and trying to get around terrain in the board, but left Khemler's unit with JUST enough room for the full Screaming Bell horde to charge in to the master necromancer. Second turn, the bell unit charged in and popped the 30 or so Skeletons through deaths and then combat resolution, and took the General with them. No buffs, and no Bell ringing to help, the Storm Vermin (half of them, really) did the work themselves.

I 13th'd the Grave Guard on the first turn, which was more or less why Heinrich's unit moved forward. They were hiding in the back with a rank or so left over to try and raise up later. This was the key reason the unit moved up and was able to be charged.

Still, I would have liked a more prolonged game with the Bell, and to test it out vs other match ups (especially war machines) before I ultimately decide to take it to Screw City GT.
I had wanted to get a few games in with the Screaming Bell in a Storm Vermin horde for a while, and have been thinking about bringing it to the tournament. My rare choices have also been up in the air for the list, so I tried out 2 WLC's with 1 Abom and 1 Doomwheel. We set up and played a battle line, as we do for most practice games...

The Bloodletters set up directly across from the Bell worried me immensely, only because the Seer can be Killing Blow'd off of the top by the infantry models. I won first turn and marched the Bell forward though, trying to soften up the 'letters.

On the second turn I made a stupid risk in the name of fun and seeing how it worked by charging head long into the Bloodletters. This amazingly was followed up by rolling a 13 on the Ringing of the Bell chart, which allows every model in the Bell unit to attack. Andrea then stopped the Death Frenzy I tried to cast on the unit, that would have given me 120 attacks! Still, the mass of attacks crushed the Bloodletter unit, and my Grey Seer managed to avoid all harm with his defense and war save, saving 2 killing blow wounds with his 4+ ward.

The Bloodthirster in this game was actually being proxied as a Great Unclean One. The next turn he charged into the flank, but I finished off the Bloodletters and BSB Herald, and reformed into the GUO. My next turn I rolled a 15 on 3d6 to also rear charge the GUO and spell the end for the Daemons.

I am intrigued by the Bell, and really think I am going to take it to Screwcity GT. I definitely want to play it against some other armies, and hopefully against some artillery to see how long it'll last.
I had been playing a lot of Skaven so wanted a break from them, and knew Drew had High Elves so wouldn't want to double up the same army, so Billy and the Daemons came out to play.

My Daemon list was basically a Bloodthirster, Daemonette and Bloodletter blocks with heralds, the BSB had the -2 LD banner, a small Horror unit with Heralds of Life and Shadow, a unit of Flamers, a Bloodcrusher Champion, and two Fiends. Drew's list had an Archmage with Life and the Book of Hoeth, White Lion and Phoenix Guard blocks, Spearmen, a few archer units, and Silver Helms.

Starting off right, Drew Dwellered my Daemonettes but my Herald survived. I wanted to get into combat quick to avoid getting Dwellered turn after turn. I moved up the middle fast and got charged by the White Lions early and lost combat. I missed my Daemonic Instability by 1, then rerolled boxcars (of course) to lose more.

This put me down to 4 left in the unit before a Fiend and Billy the Bloodthirster charged into the flank, while also in the range of the BSB and the -2 LD banner. This was key as the White Lions failed their fear test, got beaten in combat, and then were run down and destroyed. A crushing blow to the High Elves who were almost ready to take control of the center if they defeated the Daemonettes.

The High Elf magic superiority didn't do much after that as they Dwellered the Bloodletters, who were strength 5 but the only real viable target (I had the Heralds of Tzeentch outside of the Horrors). I then charged the Bloodthirster into the Archer block holding the Archmage and didn't even get to try to kill him, as they fled from Terror.

The Bloodletters and Phoenix Guard were in a standoff for a turn as Billy regained his facing, and then I charged in with both units to try and finish off the High Elves.

The combat was prolonged for a turn and then on his turn, Drew miscast and blew up a few PG, taking the Bloodthirster out of combat completely, and the PG killed off the last Bloodletters. They moved forward and attempted to retain points at the end of the game, but Billy turned around and charged them, challenged out the Prince and killed him, and ran down the broken Phoenix Guard to finish the game.

It was a solid game that really changed on the second turn when the White Lions were in range of the -2 LD banner and failed their Fear test. It did give me a better look at High Elves though, which I am hoping to take to next month's Gamers Sanctuary tournament. I have an interesting idea for a build that I think will work. We'll see.
This thing has tons of parts and I will probably have to have multiple assemblies to get it painted decently. No regular battle report today, because of being sick, but I still have two reports waiting to be written and another Screw City GT practice game scheduled for tomorrow.

These models are just plain awesome. I have a few Skaven to paint for Screw City GT before I can put any serious work into starting them though.

I assembled the Ghost Ark without the crew and passengers, and without the guns to paint it a bit easier, but also leave it more or less playable. There is a driver and 10 crew to individually paint.
The Necron Destroyer Lord for $16 was nice. I also picked a box of Wraiths, which are now one of my favorite models ever. The only problem is that while they are somewhat sturdy they are still top heavy, which I expected looking at the models.

I am hoping the resin bases I am planning on using for the army holds them down a bit. They are sturdy, until you blow on them basically... so the extra weight might to the trick. My original army intent was to not double up on units that weren't Core... but these guys really have me rethinking that. The models are my favorite, and their rules are pretty good. I still think I might stick to one unit of 6 with a Destroyer Lord attached.

Until next time. I have battle reports with Daemons vs High Elves, and Skaven vs Daemons in the works.
The idea with the "Coven of Light" HE list is loads of Lore of Light casters, and a caster who gets to pick his spells so that you can have 2 Pha's Protection spells and 2 Banishment spells... and Banishment would be at strength 7. Let's look at what Ken brought to the table.

Archmage, L4 Light, ring of corin, folariath's robes, talisman of saphery
Mage, L2 Light, seerstaff of saphery (with Pha's and Banishment)
Mage, L1 Light, annulian crystal
Noble, L1 Light, BSB, radiant gem of hoeth, charmed shield
23 Sea Guard, banner of eternal flame
29 Spearmen
5 Dragonprinces
1 Lion Chariot
28 Swordmasters, banner of sorcery
Great Eagle
Great Eagle
Great Eagle

The High Elves started off with the first turn, and an eagle and chariot tried to charge my first Gutter Runner unit. I stood and shot and then fled from the double charge. He showed his magic dominance early by Banishing the right WLC off the board easily... and then I quickly used my Dispel Scroll on the second one as it targeted the other WLC.

My first turn just about ended the game right after that scare. I cast Plague and 13th on the Seaguard and killed them all. Down to the man, leaving the 2 wizards deployed inside them standing alone at an angle in front of the General's unit. I had maneuvered my Gutter Runners and finished off the Eagles as well, but then I shot my cannon. The shot went through one of the front wizards, and into the general, who failed his look out sir, and then died. My remaining Gutter Runners on the left finished off the lone open wizard to kill all of his magic with the first shooting phase.

This devastated Ken's plans early, and surprised me... I'm not going to lie. I didn't expect that. On the second turn Ken starts to move his Swordmasters foreward and I cannon off the last Eagle and panic the Dragonprinces just about off the board (missed by 2"). Meanwhile the Hellpit rear charges the Lion chariot and wipes it out.

On the third turn it was desperation time as the Noble BSB tried charging out and get to the Grey Seer General, but failed. He then died to shooting fairly easily. The Swordmaster did get into the Hellpit and kill it, and I realized what a big mistake I made the previous turn trying to shoot my Doomrocket. It was stopped by Pha's Protection that was still up and wasted, when I could have just saved it for the next turn and greatly decreased if not wiped the Swordmasters.

The Swordmasters then overran into the Slaves and killed them, and into the Gutters behind them blocking the General's unit and killed them. While this was going on I was finishing off the rest of the High Elf army.

I used Plague and other magic to finish off the Swordmasters on the last turn to table my opponent, but I really feel that my mistake with the Doomrocket cost me. I ended up with 17 + 5 Battle points to finish the tournament... which got me 4th overall for Buckeye Battles 2012! If I hadn't screwed up I truly think I could have 20-0'd my opponent and tied for 3rd Overall with Brian Moyer and at least had a chance to podium with tie breakers. So close to making it, but honestly at the time I did not think I was that high in the placings.

In the end it was a great result, and my highest placing at a GT in my fledgeling GT "career". I will take 4th out of 96 in my 4th GT ever any day of the week.

Next up is Screw City GT in September! Until then I will be playing games, hobbying, and posting up blog posts. Keep an eye out.Rhellionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12727373774177135065noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4135552261014762020.post-57540112100114671362012-07-20T07:07:00.004-04:002012-07-20T07:10:08.236-04:00Buckeye Battles Game 4I woke up Sunday morning and joked with Andrew Sherman of the Ohiohammer podcast that we were close on points, which meant we would probably face off. He checked the score and was sure he would escape me, but we ended up matched up after all when pairings were announced! Andrew was originally set up to play Chaos Dwarfs I think, but switched to Empire because of his love for the army and the new book being out. Here is what he brought:
Cannon

I started by deploying my Scouts and then stealing the first turn roll without the +1, and was able to start taking out threats. I took out a Great Cannon and wounded another twice, just failing to totally eliminate them. A WLC took out 1 Demi Gryphon as well. On the first Empire turn, the Steam Tank immediately misfired and took a wound. The cannon then tried to fire, and misfired again... leaving the Steam Tank with no cannon after it exploded. In combat, the Arch Lechtor failed to break the Gutter Runners who were stubborn in the forest, and the Demi Gryphons charged the Hellpit. The Hellpit held through the charging lances and took a wound.

On the second turn the Gutter Runners defeated the War Altar but it held Stubborn. The Hellpit Abomination finished off the last of the Demi Gryphons. On his turn, Andrew's Steam Tank misfired AGAIN. I used my magic defense against some high bound spell rolls and shut down his spells again. My level 4 vs his level 2 and bound spells was proving to be a losing battle for the Empire.

I positioned my Warlock so they could not charged the Hellpit and would have to close the door out of position away from him. The next turn I charged the Slaves and Hellpit into the STank, and all the Slaves into the Halberd bunker next to that, hoping I would have a chance to kill the War Altar with the Abomination, and overrun into the second combat.

At this point I realized my mistake, as the characters from the Inner Circle Knights all scattered out of their unit and ran away to preserve their points. I should have charged the Abomination into them and would have crushed them. As it stood, I did not kill the War Altar until the very end of the game and lost a load of possible points for choosing to go after the wrong unit... as all of his characters (besides the General) survived.

To cap it all off though, Andy did misfire 2 more times on the 4th and 5th turn, so he ended up misfiring once for every turn we played. This ended up earning him the Misfire Award for the whole tournament! I scored a moderate victory with bonus points, and ended up near the bottom of the top few tables for round 5, where I would be playing a "Council of Light" High Elf list and loads of Banishment spam. That's up tomorrow!
Tim brought an interesting list that seemed to have many of the standard Ogre toys, but also had some Gnoblars, a Scraplauncher, and was using Heavens. He also took advantage of the comp rules and put Magic Resistance on his Slaughtermaster, so I knew I wouldn't be trying to Crack's Call that unit too much. Lets look at the list:

I would like to think I "won" deployment. I was unsure why, but Tim actually castled his Ogres in the opposite corner of my army. In the center of the board, I did have two impassable patches (the rock and the skulls... other skull patches on the board were not impassable) to funnel any Ogres into my units of Slaves. Maybe he was avoiding that. Also, there were three objective markers along the center line of the board we would be fighting for.

It did seem like he has the artillery advantage with 2 Ironblasters and a Scraplauncher, but I was happy to avoid combat with Ogres for as long as possible. The Ogres started by using their Forbidden Rod on the first turn, but I was able to stop all of his magic and leave 3 wounds on his Butcher. The first Ironblaster shot did kill my right WLC immediately, though. I started off with my Gutter Runners, killing all of the Sabertusks.

On the second turn, the Ironblaster got aggressive but failed its charge on the Gutter Runners, who put two wounds on it as they stood and shot. I was able to use my Scroll on Comet and shut down the Ogre magic again, and the mass of Leadbelchers needing 7's to hit still killed 3 Gutter Runners in the center, who passed their Panic check. The Ironblaster who didn't charge also misfired to stop it from shooting next turn. I screwed up my magic phase by rolling an 8 on 4 dice and failing to cast Plague, but my Gutters killed off the flanking Ironblaster while my remaining Warp Lightning Cannon killed 2 Mournfang and put 2 wounds on the third.

The Scrap Launcher then charged into the flank of the Gutter Runners who were in the woods while the last remaining Mournfang tried to do something and charged the Hellpit who came back onto the board from his first turn overrun. The Hellpit killed the Mournfang easily, but the Gutters lost yet stuck around due to being stubborn skirmishers in the woods. I started advancing forward toward objectives and crippled Ogres now, and Brass Orbed 4 Leadbelchers, killed the remaining Ironblaster with my WLC, and continued to hold up the Scraplauncher with stubborn Gutter Runners.

The Leadbelchers then turned and killed the lone Brass Orbing Warlock and a comet dropped to blow up the remaining WLC. The Scraplauncher finally kills off the Gutters who I had hoped could last, and looked like it may become a threat... until my turn when I killed off 19 Gnoblars with Plague and panicked the Gnoblars through the Scraplauncher who also fled.

On the last Ogre turn, the Gnoblars fled off the board but the Scraplauncher rallied. As the Ironguts smashed into the flank of my Storm Vermin and crushed them to hold one objective, I moved the rest of my scoring units into position to easily hold the other two objectives and get a win with all the bonus points.

I really think the Ogres could have threatened a lot more with the 'Gutstar by being aggressive, rather than staying back and playing "Gunline Ogres". Against Skaven I have the magic and shooting superiority with a lot more multi wound targets in front of me (and the Ironblasters are on the opposite side of the board from my Hellpit and only have 36" range). Picking up the win put me right back into the thick of the pack, and would have me matched up the next morning against Andrew Sherman, the host of the Ohiohammer Podcast, and his Empire.

Back tomorrow with the report.
The list I am running has me pretty confident against Ogres and much less afraid against the Ironblasters than I would be if I was running a Bell and/or Furnace. The ability to take out chaff and put lots of wounds on Ogres and Chariots with Gutter Runners is a big advantage. Lets look at what he had:

Slaughtermaster (Maw), Fencer's Blades, Glittering Scales, Greedy Fist
Bruiser, BSB, Crown of Command, Dragonhelm
9 Ogres
4 Leadbelchers
4 Mournfang, Dragonhide Banner
1 Sabertusks
1 Sabertusks
Ironblaster

I set my deployment with Slaves in range of the General and BSB as usual, but the Storm Vermin were on the far flank to capture the table quarter for the scenario. They were also behind the hill and would be protected from the charge of the Mournfang for as long as possible. They also got the Brass Orb as added Mournfang defense until I would be able to shoot at them with my cannon.

Starting off by stealing the roll for the first turn without the +1, I was able to put 3 wounds on the Ironblaster but not finish it off. I also killed a Sabertusk in the Ogre midst to force a panic check, but did not panic off any Ogres. I still don't know why Ogre players put cats in range to cause panic, but I see it time and time again. The Ogres come back by charging Gutter Runners, who flee successfully, and hitting the Abom with the IB but only doing 1 wound.

On the second turn the Skaven started to light it up. In the magic phase, a Skitterleaping Grey Seer kills 2 Mournfang and 2 Leadbelchers on the right, while shooting from the Gutter Runners finishes the Ironblaster. The Warp Lightning Cannons turned on amazing mode, with the first killing 6 Ogres, and the second killing another 4 with 2 shots. The Abomination and Slaves charged into some more Ogres and kills a couple, but they hold... to be charged by the general the next turn.

While prolonged combat goes on, my second Grey Seer cascades off the board in order to finish off the last Mournfang. I would have preferred to kill them without dying, but I'll take it! The Hellpit is killed in combat but the combat is won and the Slaves run the Ogre block off the board, as the General and BSB stay to fight the flanking Gutter Runners.

The Gutters kill the BSB before the General runs them down, only to have the General fail 2 Blood Gruel tests in a row to kill himself the next turn, as the remaining Butcher from the Ironguts is killed as he flees in the middle of the board. This pretty much ends the game as the Gorger finally comes on and kills a cannon, but much too late to effect the outcome.

I end with a max win, and start climbing back up the tables. Tomorrow for game 3 I am matched up with Ogres again to try and keep rising in the standings.
I brought the Skaven and a nearly identical list as Blood in the Sun to make preparation and practice easier, and to stay completely familiar with the list between events. The event had special comp where Magic Resistance could be used against any spell, even spells that normally do not allow saves (Dwellers, Pit, 13th). Also, hills blocked line of sight to all but large targets.

Also importantly was the "comp" which was not truly comp, but a banding system. This meant the hard armies would only play the hard armies while the soft drew the soft for the first full day. My first opponent of the event was Jason Matley, who beat me for the GLWL League Championship with his Dark Elves. He brought them again, and this time they were fully painted, and I was looking for some revenge.
The scenario was very cool, in that there was a screen completely blocking the other side of the board to make army deployment hidden. Also, Scouts were placed after the screen was removed, so I was happy with the advantage of my Scouts seeing exactly where they were going.

I was happy to have most of my force away from the Hydra and my HPA on the exact opposite side of the flaming Witch Elves to start, and I aimed my Gutter Runners at his smaller and easier to kill units immediatly to get the jump on points. My opponent started first, but I drew first blood after Jason forgot to put the Cauldron ward save onto the Shades. I Plagued them and then shot them with Gutter Runners immediately. The Doomrocket shot true and also took out 13/20 Witches with a long 18" direct hit. My WLC also sniped his second 2+ armor Master that was soon to be aimed directly at my Gutter Runners. This was a big blow to the DE plans.

I more or less ignored the Cauldron and went to work trying to pick off units on at a time. In the center the Witches got into the Slaves and chopped them up good, but took a few wounds in return. It was enough that when the Slaves exploded after combat, they also took the last remaining Witches with them. As the Corsairs pushed forward I moved my Doomrocket Warlock up to intercept them but couldn't make it all the way. That magic phase I held a few dice to Skitterleap him at the end directly in the path of them, and at an angle so that they would be forced to close the door away from my entire army and then overrun further away.

Meanwhile on the opposite flank the Dreadlord with his reverse ward save and 2+ armor was stuck in with the Hellpit. He had been holding the entire game on his Stubborn Leadership but actually did win a round once against the also stubborn DE Lord. He was finally finished off in the end, after putting two wounds on the Lord. The near-miss was when the HPA was dropped to Strength 3, still made it through the 2+ armor (rolled a 1) and the Lord made his save on a 3 to survive.

The game ended, and I was sure I had done enough damage to win, but it turned out I needed to win by 250 or more points and I only had won by 230 so got the Draw. The Dreadlord had a wound remaining, and also the Sorcerer that my Gutter Runners got into the last turn but couldn't finish. We only got to play 4 turns because the round seemed to get started late by the TO's and the scenario made deployment take longer which hurt my army... but sometimes you just don't get enough time.

So I started off 0-0-1 for Buckeye Battles, and had Ogres to look forward to next! Back tomorrow with the report.
The older plastic Warriors have a load of annoying mold lines, but the models are pretty cool. Mold lines do take up a lot of time, but I was able to catch up on some 40K podcasts I haven't listened to in 6 months.
I have to say I am pretty impressed by the newer models I have put together so far (only the 1 sniper and Overlord, but they are awesome). The idea to start with this army as I build will be variety. The Necron model range is so awesome I don't see myself having much of a spam model list at all. It'll be more likely that I have 1 of each of a few units. I definitely know I want to get some Wraiths and a Flyer or two.
So far, this is the first army list that I have written for the Necrons. I already slightly changed it because I think I definitely want a Cryptek or two (shown). Any advice is appreciated. For me, balance is key... because I like the models and because I'm not sure spam is the way to go in 6th:

195 Overlord, command barge, warscythe, mindshackle
160 Destroyer Lord, weave, mindshackle
115 Royal Court x2, Destruction/Solar Pulse, Despair/Veil of Darkness
150 Triarch Stalker
095 5 Deathmarks
245 10 Warriors, Ghost Ark
130 10 Warriors
130 10 Warriors
165 5 Warriors, Night Scythe
195 5 Wraiths, 2 whip coils
175 Doomscythe
090 Annihilation Barge
